After a tough rugby season in 2022, with an unexpectedly poor performance in the quarter-finals of the Eastern Province Grand Challenge against Progress Rugby Club from Kariega, Kruisfontein United is now enjoying one of its best rugby seasons since its establishment in 1992.

To further showcase their talents, the club will play against Trying Stars from Alexandria, who made it to second place in their pool, at the Kruisfontein Sport Complex on September 2.

According to the club vice-president, Jaques Alexander, with new goals for the 2023 season the club’s mindset began shifting when the Super 14 kicked off in January.

He said that the club enjoyed an undefeated performance, winning six consecutive games against top teams from the province, as well as against the Border Rugby Union.

“Our club played three big games within seven days, when we played in the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and in the finals,” said Alexander.

Unfortunately, he said that they lost in the finals against the former champions, East London Police, by 38 against 45.

Alexander said that they were then crowned as runners-up in the Super 14 competition.

He said that the Eastern Province Super League competition started shortly after the Super 14 competition ended, and with new goals for the season their team took it game by game.

“We have now reached the end of the fixtures, and can proudly say that we ended on a very high note,” said Alexander.

He said that the club won all 14 games with quite a good performance and big scores, home and away.

“What makes this incredible is the fact that we won 13 out of the 14 games with a bonus point, and won all 14 games in a row. We ended the season with 69 points. With this performance we managed to claim the top spot out of 32 teams who competed in this competition,” said Alexander.

“Our first reserve team and the second team also ended second in their divisions, and qualified for play-offs.

Alexander said that their next game will kick off at 15:30 on September 2 when they will face Trying Stars from Alexandria.

He said that the game promises to be a very big one, with many supporters in attendance.

“We would like to urge our supporters to come out in numbers, dressed in purple to support the boys on the field,” said Alexander.

He further said that the management, coaches, and players wish to thank each one for their supporters throughout the rugby season, as well as for the upcoming play-offs.

The management wishes to send out a request to individuals, businesses, and organisations who wish to partner with the club.

In addition, he said that food stalls will be available during the game, and businesses or individuals can contact the club if they would like to have their food stalls on display.

“We want to thank the businesses who have already invested in and partnered with our club. Your support and contributions make a huge impact, and contribute towards the excellent performance of the club,” said Alexander.
