After two years without the biggest women’s rugby tournament in the province, the Chris Hani District have started preparing for the Geneva Scholtz Women’s Rugby Tournament.

The tournament will be taking place in Middelburg in August this year after being affected by COVID-19 in the past two years.

The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the Chris Hani District held U19 Girls’ Rugby trials at the Tobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre in Komani on Saturday.

The aim of these trials was to pick a team that will represent the district in this prestigious tournament in August.

Lamla Maneli of the DSRAC said the training at this point is to get all the players in shape.

“Look, these girls have not played for a while as we have missed the whole two years of rugby due to COVID-19. So, it was just to get everybody back in action to see where we were especially with the local players. We are also hoping that the plan will come up and at least these players can get an opportunity to train together maybe twice a month before the tournament.” said Maneli.

There were four ladies’ rugby teams that took part in these trials and those teams were Queenstown Ladies, Blue Birds from Whittlesea, Tsomo Bombers Rugby Ladies and Bulukweza Ladies, both from Tsomo.

In total 30 players were selected and 8 of them are from Tsomo Bombers Rugby Ladies.

The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the Chris Hani District hosts this tournament in the Great Karoo town of Middelburg every year in the name of Geneva Scholtz who died on the field in 2013 while playing rugby.
