THE annual Chris Hani District u/19 Rugby Sevens Tournament will be played on Saturday at the Tobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre in Komani.
“Previously we hosted u/19 teams from local rugby clubs in Komani only, however, this year we are thrilled to announce that as a mission to expand this tournament, we have invited u/19 teams from all the local municipalities within the Chris Hani District,” said Marvin Pringle, tournament director.
The tournament is hosted by the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the Chris Hani District, in partnership with Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, Chris Hani District Sports Confederation and Chris Hani Rugby Union.
The tournament will be contested by the following 12 teams: Tsomo Bombers Rugby Union (Tsomo, Intsika Yethu LM), Grootfontein Rugby Club (Middelburg, Inxuba Yethemba LM), Dordrecht Buffalo Rugby Club (Dordrecht, Emalahleni LM), Blue Birds Rugby Club from Whittlesea, Ubumbo Academy from Ezibeleni, Progress Rugby Club, Shinning Stars Rugby Club, Hams Rugby Club, Old Collegians Rugby Club, Breakers Rugby Club 1, Breakers Rugby Club and Renegades Queens, all from Komani.
Pringle also encouraged teams to adopt schools, since the schools are very important in the development of sport.
“As this is an u/19 tournament we encourage clubs to adopt schools as they are the feeder system of club rugby in the district,” said Pringle.
The winning team will receive a huge trophy, gold medals and rugby balls. The runners-up will walk away with silver medals and rugby balls while the third-placed team will take home bronze medals and rugby balls.
