GOOD . . . better . . . best . . . Victoria Park Scorpions.

The Victoria Park Scorpions triumphed at the fifth edition of the prestigious HPJ Old Collegians 10s Tournament – thus, becoming the new tournament champions.

This after they beat the Crusaders 12-0 at the tournament that took to the field at the Tobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre in Komani on Saturday.

The community-based tournament – consisting of eight local teams and sporting netball, rugby, boxing, table tennis and soccer – is an initiative to build and uphold community development and social cohesion by playing a 10s tournament.

Tournament Director, Maxwell Levine, said that sport-lovers from Bloemfontein, Aliwal North, East London and surrounding towns came to support the players.

“It is an honour to announce that we had a successful tournament,” he said. “The tournament was of high quality and the teams were very competitive – delivering nail-biting matches.”

According to Levine, adding three new sporting codes (boxing, table tennis and soccer) to the tournament, they were able to involve every member of the community. “Our objective is mass participation and to reach out to every member of the community to take part in sport,” he said.

Anathi Xhosa and Ntsika Bekanjani were named the winners in the boxing category, while the Titans claimed victory in table tennis.

012 and S.V.T. won the soccer and netball categories respectively.

The tournament champions, the Scorpions, walked away with a trophy, gold medals, a trip to Cape Town for the Cape Town 10s and a prize valued over R30 000.
