In a thrilling encounter, Queens’ College 1st XV bulldozed past East London’s Port Rex Technical High School’s 1st XV 46-3 in their highly competitive match at Queens’ College’s Parry West Fields in Komani on May 6.
The oldest school in the Border region and among the 100 oldest schools in South Africa played in Parry West Fields since their traditional Victoria Recreation Grounds is still under construction.
In a match that saw Queens’ College dominate during different parts of the match, the Queens’ College 1st XV Head Coach Clinton Loest was not happy with the team’s first half performance.
“I think in the first half we lacked intensity. We did not play with enough accuracy, and we did not score enough tries in the first half which was disappointing. However, at half time we regrouped, and we told them to be more aggressive over the ball and then things started to happen for us which is the way we like to play,” said Loest.
During the game, Queens’ College scored eight tries with Mveli Mqulo who came from the bench scoring three tries to help his side.
Mqulo played his first game after recovering from an injury and he said he was surprised with his performance.
“I just got back after being injured and it’s quite surprising that I performed very well because I was not expecting my performance to be so good but it was the best for the team, I think,” said Mqulo.
This coming weekend Queens’ College will be playing at Dale’s Reunion in King William’s Town.
Loest said this game is one of the highlights of the season.
“Dale game is one of the highlights of the season for us, so the boys are really going to be ready for that game. It is going to be a massive challenge, but our boys are very keen because when we play Dale we always look forward to that game,” said Loest.
