Young chess player Vuyolwethu Ntlantsana (13), from Ezibeleni, won gold in a tournament that he was invited to in East London this past weekend.
The Bulelani High School Grade 8 learner received an invitation from The Legends Chess Club to take part in the tournament that was held at the Advance for Life Christian Academy High School Summerpride, East London.
Vuyolwethu, who captains Fresh Minds Chess Club that is campaigning in the Chris Hani District Chess League, was on form on the day as he won all the games he played in the tournament on his way to the podium.
His club is at the top of the standings in the 10-team Chris Hani District Chess League, with 24 overall points after they won all their eight games this season so far.
His coach at Fresh Minds Chess Club, Luzuko Ndinisa, praised the players for his commitment and discipline.
“He is a much disciplined boy who is so committed in his games. (He is) very calm, which is very important in chess.
“We made him the captain of the team because of his brightness and great skill of communication with his teammates. I am proud of his success and the most beautiful thing about this is that this will rub off on other players,” said Ndinisa.
The player said that he was humbled to be invited while being over-the-moon to win gold.
“The competitiveness is what drives me to always do better; I was very surprised yet humbled to be invited by The Legends Chess Club in East London to take part in that tournament. Then winning the medal was the cherry on top.
“It is a huge privilege for me, and I want to encourage all other players to be consistent in practice and to always work hard; the results will come later,” said ‘Fifi’ as he is also known.
