LAST week at Queen’s College Boys’ Primary School Hall, the Department of Education, together with the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and South African Hockey, officially launched modified hockey.
Modified hockey is a smaller version of hockey, whereby plastic sticks and a bigger ball are used and can be played on any surface, not just on AstroTurf.
Louis Rex Primary, Queen’s Junior, Southbourne, St Theresa Primary, Laerskool Hangklip, Laerskool Cradock and Laerskool Burgersdorp were present.
The launch was designed to train coaches in the basic concepts of coaching including group management and organisation, conducting modified games and activities, safety and enjoyment.
The programme will teach participants the basic skills, giving them the opportunity to not only fall in love with the game, but also provide them with a dream that one day they can represent South Africa at the highest level of all, the Olympic Games.
The training was conducted by South African Hockey project manager, Gary Dolley. “South African Hockey’s idea is to launch the sport in all 52 districts by 2022. At the moment we are in 30 districts. In the last two years we activated more than 380 schools throughout the country and this year our target is 150 schools,” said Dolley.
