NEWLY formed sensational Komani Hiking Club is gaining momentum as the club hosted its second successful hiking excursion on Saturday 16th of October.

This time the club journeyed to Lukhanji Mountain which is situated at Zingqutu Village that is under the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality.

Lukhanji Mountain runs from the eastern side of Komani to the western side which gives nice views of the surrounding areas from different angles of the mountain which makes it very interesting to climb.

The mountain is mostly rocky from the foot of the mountain until the mountain top which makes it tough ascending and descending.

This time around the activity was planned as the club backyard event which is meant to be a club training session.

“We only publicised it internally with minimal outside publicity; however, we welcomed those who joined the club and wanted to be part of the experience as a result 40 participants showed up. The numbers were fewer than Bozwana event; however, for the club event it was a good turn up. We are confident that when we open for the public the numbers will definitely rise,” said one of Club founding member Nolubabalo Mtshakazi

The club is busy drafting an Annual Schedule with activities such as Mountaineering and Hiking trail which will include Bozwana Mountain, Lukhanji Montain and other mountains yet to be explored and trails that are within the Chris Hani District.

Mtshakazi also said they want to boost the economy of the district through these events.

“It is time for us to appreciate what our district has to offer in terms of tourism and heritage through participation in its local activities and explore the natural beauty. Furthermore, our participation will ensure that we boost our own health and wellness, appreciate what nature has to offer and boost our local economy as we intend in the future to involve the local communities where we hike to have various stalls (food, beadwork) and offer accommodation to the tourists,” concluded Mtshakazi.
