Ubumbo Sport Academy rugby player, Siyamthanda Mcelu, has been offered a scholarship by Durban High School in KwaZulu-Natal, after shining on the field for his academy.

The 16-year-old boy will be doing Grade 10 in Durban High School with 100% scholarship that includes the following: boarding, school uniform, school tours and school fees.

The Komani-born rugby player has been brilliant on field for Ubumbo Sports Academy, winning three tournaments for the Ezibeleni-based academy, including the inaugural Under-16 Edwin ‘Nutse’ Ngculu Annual Heritage Rugby Tournament, which they won in Mlungisi Stadium last year.

The former Kwanca High School learner was over the moon after receiving the news that he managed to get the scholarship.

“I just want to thank my parents for trusting our Ubumbo founder and coach, Bongani Nogilana, with me. They gave him support during my time with Ubumbo and I thank them for that. I am super excited about the journey I am about to begin and all thanks to Nogilana, who prepared me for this challenge,” said Mcelu.

Nogilana said, “His game has certainly impressed me, and I do believe that a lot is due to his determination and dedication. He does have the potential to be one of South Africa’s best rugby players.

“When Siya started with us, he was playing as a centre, but I converted him to a number 8. I received a call from a friend saying that Durban High was looking for a lock and we had only two days to prepare him for the trials. The first day was not easy for the boy as he joined first team training, but he managed as a champion. After four days, they offered him 100% scholarship and we were all happy for him,” concluded Nogilana.
