TWO elderly community members literally rolled up their sleeves to help keeping the grounds of the J.A. Ncaca J.P.S. in Cradock neat and tidy.

Recently Alex Goniwe and Bhesi Sindelo, who live next door to the school, showed their appreciation and love for education by starting to clean the Grade R playpark themselves.

They themselves took the initiative and approached the SMT of the school, asking their permission to do this project.

What makes this effort so special is that both Goniwe and Sindelo are retired and despite the heat, these two gentlemen cleaned the area with spades and rakes.

What is even more remarkable is the fact that Goniwe is 94 years old.

He is the father of the late Matthew Goniwe, who was killed by the security forces of the old government.

When the principal, Alfie Blume, asked Goniwe what he had to pay him for the job, his answer was, “this is also our school and our pride and we do not want any money”.

As a gesture of thanks, the school handed over two fruit hampers to the gentlemen.
