KOMANI-BASED side, Breakers Rugby Football Club, started their season with a win, beating newcomers from East London, Black Eagles RFC, in their opening Eastern Cape Super 14 Rugby Competition match at Tobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre Rugby Fields in Komani on Saturday afternoon.
The home side won the game 21-16 after leading 6-3 at half-time.
The first try of the game came in the second half when hooker, Nyameko Maso, dotted down two minutes after restart. Breakers’ second try came from substitute Maso Lali, while fullback Nkunku Mbusi added 11 points with his boot, three penalties and one conversion.
Despite being victorious, Breakers team manager, Solomon Manzi, had good things to say about the Eagles, commenting, “Whoever plays against them must be aware of their attacks.
“They were very good in their attacking game, but we were outsmarting them in the frontline, and we eventually picked up on their strong points and we managed to capitalise on those,” said Manzi.
“As for us, we were a bit rusty, since it was our first game of the season, but I believe we will be better as time goes in the season.
“In the first half we missed two tries, but I am glad we managed to win in front of our supporters.”
Breakers will be on the road this coming Saturday, visiting East London’s Ncera Leopards in their second EC Super 14 Rugby Competition game at Ntenteni Rugby Fields.
“We know Ncera Leopards very well and we know how to prepare for them.
“They managed to get a win as well at home and that means we will face a motivated side in their backyard and it is going to be a great game of rugby,” said Manzi.
