Steynsburg-based
Amavarara Football Club have been crowned Eastern Cape Champions of the ABC
Motsepe League after beating Gqeberha’s Peace Makers Football Club in the final
game of the Provincial 2022/23 ABC Motsepe League season at Mthatha Stadium on
Saturday afternoon, 15 April.
Amavarara came into the final game as the Champions of
EC ABC Motsepe League Stream A after second placed Sinenkani FC failed to close
a 5-point gap at the top, while Peace Makers had to wait for the last game to win
Stream A with one point, second placed FC Siyanda breathing in their neck.
The former Ezibeleni-based side will be representing
the Eastern Cape Province at the upcoming ABC Motsepe League National playoffs
scheduled for 5 to 9 June 2023 at a province to that will be confirmed
during the course of the week.
Amavarara Chairman, Akhona Pele ,who is one of the youngest chairpersons in
the province after buying the team at the end of 2021/22 season, said it is time for the team to be promoted to the Professional level of the South
African football.
“We are over the moon as a club to be where we are now
because it was a difficult season for us. You will remember the team relocated
to Joe Gqabi Region and the players had to familiarise themselves with the new
environmental and that is not easy.
“But now we believe it is our time to lift this
province and participate in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. It is not done
yet, we still need to work hard at the National Playoffs before reaching the
goal but we believe with the talent we have in the team we can achieve that. As
the Chairman of the team I will support the technical team with everything to
achieve our goal,” said Pele.
This will not be the first Amavarara representing the
Eastern Cape this season. In February they travelled to Gauteng to face PSL
side TS Galaxy in the last 32 of Nedbank Cup where they impressed Galaxy coach
Sead Ramovic from Germany.
