THE newly restructured Eastern Cape Super 14 Rugby Tournament is set to be launched at the EPRU office in Port Elizabeth today.

The launch is in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Sport Confederation and the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, as well as the Eastern Province and Border Rugby Unions.

The tournament, to kick of at the Central Rugby Grounds in Uitenhage at 19:00 tomorrow, January 17, will see 14 teams take to the field as opposed to only 12 teams in the past.

First to battle it out are PE Harlequins RFC and Progress RFC.

Komani’s Breakers RFC will entertain rugby enthusiasts at the Mlungisi Stadium on Saturday, January 18, when they take on the Black Eagles from East London.

Newcomers include African Bombers RFC from Zwide Location in Port Elizabeth and Trying Stars RFC from Alexandria (both under the Eastern Cape Rugby Union), as well as Border Rugby Union teams Young Leopards RFC, Black Eagles RFC and Ncera Leopards.

The Eastern Cape Super 14 Rugby competition is a preseason tournament played by seven teams from the Border Rugby Union and seven teams from the Eastern Province Rugby Union in a round robin format of five matches each.
