The chimes of time are slowly but surely ticking away for a Powerball winner who has won millions in a Powerball draw in July last year.

Lottery rules in South Africa stipulate that lottery prize money should be claimed within 365 days.

An unknown winner netted around R7.5 million in a Powerball draw in July 2021. The ticket was purchased at Georgious SUPERSPAR in Fort Beaufort. Nobody has come forward to claim the big prize.

According to Stellios Georgiou, owner of Georgious SUPERSPAR, the prize remains unclaimed. Fort Beaufort residents became aware of the huge windfall when it was posted on Facebook recently.

The cut-off date for claiming the prize is July 12. That leaves the aspirant winner with around two weeks to claim the big prize. Local residents are advised by the supermarket group to recheck their Powerball tickets from last year or bring them to the shop for verification.

The winner could well also be from outside Fort Beaufort. People attending functions or funerals from other areas or provinces often pop in at the store to buy themselves refreshments and then at the same time purchase their Lotto or Powerball tickets. Lotto tickets are also often purchased by people under the influence of alcohol and then get misplaced.

The store management hopes that somehow the lucky winner would claim their prize within the next two weeks or else it will be a case of “if you snooze, you lose”.
