The Department of
Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the Chris Hani District, in partnership
with Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality and Chris Hani District Sports
Confederation, will host the annual Chris Hani Under 19 Sevens Rugby Tournament
on Saturday, 4 March at the Thobi Indoor Sports Centre Fields in Komani.
Thirteen teams from different
municipalities in the Chris Hani District will be fighting for the crown that
was won by Komani’s QC Renegades last year at the same venue.
Teams that will be
participating in the Chris Hani Under-19 Sevens Rugby Tournament are:
- QC
Renegades (Komani) - Breakers 1 & 2 (Komani)
- Hams Rugby Club (Komani)
- Progress (Komani)
- Shinning Stars (Komani)
- Cradock Lions (Cradock)
- Grootfontein (Middleburg)
- Cofimvaba Bulldogs (Cofimvaba)
- Blue Buffs (Dordrecht)
- Blue Birds (Whittlesea)
- Tarka Stars Rugby (Tarkastad)
There will be seven
players on each team on the field, and each half will last a mere seven
minutes, making each match electrifying and fast-paced. The format is always
popular with the rugby fans.
DSRAC Club and Sport
Development Assistant Director, Lamla Maneli, said the tournament is vital for
the development of rugby in the region.
“The
Chris Hani
Under-19 Sevens Rugby Tournament is a vital competition for the
continued development up and coming rugby players around the region. The
tournament has grown to be a special and exciting event over the years and we
expect people to come in numbers on Saturday,” said Maneli.
The winning team will
receive a huge trophy, gold medals and rugby balls. The runners-up will walk
away with silver medals and rugby balls, while the third-placed team will take
home bronze medals and rugby balls.
