Eight foreign nationals were arrested on Wednesday, May 31 in a joint operation in Komani for allegedly contravening the immigration act and trafficking in persons.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said the operation was conducted by the Hawks, department of labour, the dog unit and home affairs immigration officers.
“The joint team responded to information about foreign nationals who were allegedly involved in trafficking in persons from neighbouring countries, who were later hired as cheap labour to make bricks in Factory Road in Komani.”
During a search, Mgolodela said, seven Lesotho nationals were identified with no documents allowing them to be in the country.
“The Lesotho foreign nationals were charged and detained for contravention of the Immigration Act. The search also led to the arrest of a Pakistani national for allegations of trafficking in persons,” she said.
