Durban’s King Shaka International Airport will activate a full-scale emergency drill today.

DURBAN – King Shaka International Airport will activate a full-scale emergency drill today, 26 September, as part of its mandatory biennial safety preparedness program.

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is conducting the comprehensive Aerodrome Emergency Exercise in compliance with South African aviation legislation and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, demonstrating the airport’s commitment to maintaining the highest levels of public health, safety, and security.

The large-scale simulation is testing the airport’s disaster response capabilities and readiness protocols in the event of an aircraft emergency. The exercise evaluates all systems, procedures, and personnel to ensure effective coordination during potential aircraft or airport incidents.

Multiple emergency services and government agencies are participating in the drill, including the South African Police Service, eThekwini Disaster Risk Management Centre, Fire and Rescue Service, the South African National Defence Force, Metro Emergency Medical Services, and Traffic Police.

Airport officials confirmed that the heightened activity observed around the airport precinct is part of a planned simulation and not an actual emergency situation. Normal flight operations and passenger services will continue without interruption throughout the exercise.

“This critical safety drill is mandated every two years and forms part of ACSA’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards,” airport authorities stated.

Passengers and members of the public are advised to monitor the ACSA Mobile App and the company’s official social media channels for real-time updates regarding airport operations.
