Tributes are pouring in following the death of Hollywood legend Robert Redford, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89.

Actress Jane Fonda, a longtime friend and collaborator, said the news left her devastated. “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for,” she said.

Meryl Streep also honoured Redford, describing him as “one of the lions”. In a brief statement shared with AFP by her publicist Ashton Fontana, she added: “Rest in peace my lovely friend.”

US President Donald Trump reacted to the news after being informed by a reporter outside the White House. “Robert Redford had a series of years where there was nobody better. There was a period of time when he was the hottest. I thought he was great,” Trump said.

Redford died in his sleep early on Tuesday morning at his home in Utah, the New York Times reported.

His career spans more than six decades. He rose to fame in the 1960s and 1970s with iconic roles in films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), and All the President’s Men (1976), establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s leading men.
