The suspects facing murder charges following the mysterious death of Somerset West resident Jack van der Spuy were back in the dock on Monday 20 April.

The case continued in the Somerset West Regional Court, with the next appearance scheduled for Friday (24 April) for a request for legal representation.

The police investigation continues a year after the local businessman died in a mysterious house fire in the Briza residential area.

The fire occurred at Van der Spuy’s Louis Trichardt Street residence in the early hours of Wednesday 16 April 2025.

Emergency services responded at 02:15 and battled the blaze for three hours before finding Van der Spuy’s body in the bedroom.

The police’s immediate investigation led to two suspects, Phillipus Havenga (44) and Janine van Wyk (37) in Paarl later that day, through tracking Van der Spuy’s stolen Ford Transit.

They were arrested at Zomerlust SPAR in Main Road, Paarl, around 14:00.

Initially charged with possession of stolen property, murder charges were added when police determined Van der Spuy was likely already dead before the fire started.

His family, including daughter Jacqueline Enslin and son Frank, described the past year as “incredibly rough”. They said they are still struggling to process the traumatic circumstances surrounding his death while honouring his memory.
