Intensive multi-disciplinary integrated Easter holiday safety operations are underway across the Free State.
The province serves as a major thoroughfare for travellers journeying to spend time with families. Multitudes of people are embarking on pilgrimages and holiday travel, and the Free State has positioned itself as a critical corridor requiring enhanced safety measures to protect motorists and combat crime during the busy period.
For the Easter 2026 weekend, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has implemented a multi-disciplinary security operation, Operation Shanela II, across the province to manage the heavy influx of pilgrims, specifically targeting the N1 highway corridor.
While the main ZCC pilgrimage occurs in Limpopo, the Free State acts as a key transit hub for thousands of travellers and pilgrims moving throughout the country, resulting in high-density deployments, roadblocks, and increased police visibility to curb crime and ensure road safety.
On Friday 3 April a major roadblock operation is being held on the N8 corridor between Ladybrand and the Maseru Border Post.
This is a prominent border town and is situated about 15 km from the Caledon Bridge/Maseru Port of Entry, which is one of the busiest border posts to Lesotho.
Various operations were launched on Thursday 2 April. A comprehensive roadblock was established on the N1 road in the Glen Police Station precinct, bringing together multiple agencies in a coordinated safety effort.
The operation involved Visible Policing Units, Public Order Police, Corporate Communication and Liaison, the Department of Community Safety Roads and Transport (Provincial Traffic and Road Safety), SANRAL, 911 Netcare, Life EMS, Busamed Med Response, and Emergency Medical Service personnel.

Premier MaQueen Joyce Letsoha-Mathae visited the roadblock to personally deliver an Easter goodwill message to the integrated forces and road users, demonstrating government’s commitment to ensuring safe travel during the holiday period.
The roadblock operations focused on multiple safety and security objectives. Vehicles and drivers were stopped for compliance checks with road traffic laws, including verification of driving licences, vehicle roadworthiness assessments, and inspections for illegal activities.
Safety awareness pamphlets were distributed to motorists to promote responsible driving behaviour during the Easter holidays, whilst emergency medical personnel remained on standby to respond to any incidents.
High-density deployments implementing various operational concepts have been established throughout the province during the Easter period.
In the Fezile Dabi District, similar multi-disciplinary operations aimed at ensuring road safety and combating crime were conducted, with roadblocks positioned at strategic locations on the N1 towards the Vaal Plaza toll gate.
The comprehensive approach brings together various stakeholders to create a unified safety network that addresses both traffic safety and crime prevention during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
By combining traffic enforcement, crime prevention, and emergency medical response capabilities, the Free State has created a comprehensive safety umbrella for holiday travellers.
