BULTFONTEIN – Members of the SAPS Soshanguve K9 Unit have arrested four undocumented persons after discovering an illegal gold refinery on a plot in Bultfontein.
The operation followed information received from an informant on Thursday, 26 February, which led officers to the site where the suspects were found engaged in refining sand believed to contain gold.
Police recovered four refinery machines, a large black gas tank, a medium grey gas tank, a welding torch, countless bags containing sand, and a motor for operating the refinery equipment.
Illegal gold refining involves the unlawful processing of gold-bearing material to extract and purify gold without the required permits, often using dangerous and environmentally harmful methods.

The four suspects face charges including illegal possession of gold-bearing material, illegal refinery of gold, possession of material used to refine gold, and contravention of the Immigration Act.
District Commissioner Major General Samuel Thine commended the officers for their dedication, vigilance, and excellent teamwork, which led to the successful arrests and seizure. He encouraged members to continue executing their duties with the same level of commitment and professionalism.
The matter remains under investigation, and the suspects are expected to appear before the Magistrate’s Court.
Law enforcement authorities have indicated they will continue to intensify operations aimed at combating illegal mining and related criminal activities in the area. This operation highlights ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal mining operations that pose environmental and safety risks whilst operating outside regulatory frameworks.
