GQEBERHA – A fatal head-on collision claimed five lives and injured two people in yesterday’s car accident on the M4 road in Gqeberha.
According to the spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Transport and Safety, Unathi Binqose, the two vehicles, both SUVs, collided head-on yesterday, 31 October on the M4 road from Summerstrand towards the N2 freeway in Gqeberha at about 17:30.
“A Chevrolet Captiva SUV with four occupants, a male adult driver with his two children from Summerstrand heading towards the N2 road, and a Nissan Qashqai with four adult females, all of whom appeared to be retirees, were travelling from the N2 direction heading towards Summerstrand.”
He added that all four occupants from the Qashqai died at the scene, along with the male driver of the Captiva.
The two injured occupants who were in the Captiva, believed to be the children of the driver who died, were rushed to Livingston Provincial Hospital for further medical examination.
“The main cause of the crash is still unknown at this stage,” Binqose said.
A culpable homicide docket has been opened at Mount Road SAPS for further investigation.
