The Durban July is now Africa’s richest horse race. The prize money for the 2026 running will double to R10 million.
Hollywoodbets revealed the record-breaking stakes at the “July in Christmas” event at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on Friday, 5 December, confirming that the winner’s prize will surge from R3 million to R6 million. The company has also expanded the prize distribution, ensuring that 12 finishers rather than the previous 10 will receive prize money on Saturday 4 July 2026.
Devin Heffer, Hollywoodbets’ brand and communications manager, announced that the 130th running will restore the race to its traditional true handicap format, fundamentally changing the competitive landscape.
“We are allocating weights in handicap races which enable horses of varied ability to race competitively against each other,” Heffer explained. “The fundamental principle dictates that horses with higher official merit ratings will carry more weight, whilst we reduce the lightest weight from 54kg to 52kg and increase the heaviest weight, levelling the playing field and honouring the true handicap heritage of a race first run in 1897.”
Hollywoodbets assumed sponsorship of the Durban July in 2022, immediately raising stakes from R2 million to R5 million. The company has now doubled this investment, recognising the race’s growing prestige and popularity.
“Every year since we began sponsoring, the July meeting has grown bigger and better, and we decided the prize money should match the feature race’s expanding prestige and popularity,” Heffer stated. “The whole country comes to a standstill for the two minutes of the Hollywoodbets Durban July, and doubling the stakes forms part of our mission to return South African horse racing to its glory days.”
The enhanced prize pool creates substantial economic impact beyond racing circles. In 2025, the Hollywoodbets Durban July contributed an estimated R840 million to Durban’s gross domestic product, and organisers expect the 2026 changes to significantly increase this total.
The restored handicap format will dramatically alter racing strategy and betting opportunities. Heffer explained that handicap races adjust each horse’s weight according to rating, age, and sex, aiming to give every runner a fair chance.
“In 2025, only 7kg separated the bottom and top weights, but next year this will increase to 10kg,” he noted. “The bottom weight drops by 1kg to 52kg whilst the top weight increases by 2kg to 62kg. This wider spread creates significant opportunities for punters to identify the best-weighted horse, offering optimal value.”
The changes promise to intensify competition among racehorse owners for the coveted 18 places in the field. A five-person national panel of racing experts will select the final field and two reserves based on horses’ performance in qualifying races and merit ratings.
The doubled stakes and deeper prize pool will benefit multiple stakeholders across South African racing. More horses will receive prize money, whilst the traditional handicap format provides genuine winning opportunities for previously overlooked runners.
“This race belongs to Mzansi, and the true handicap will add enormously to its excitement,” Heffer emphasised. “It gives punters more chances to win and means that even long-shot horses possess real chances of glory in a race that represents the pinnacle achievement for every owner, trainer, breeder, jockey, and groom in South Africa.”
Hollywoodbets records its biggest annual trading day during the July meeting, with record audiences engaging online and across their 90 physical stores throughout the country. The enhanced format promises to attract even greater participation from both serious punters and casual racegoers.
“The first Saturday in July remains the biggest day on South Africa’s horse racing calendar,” Heffer concluded. “By doubling the stakes and restoring the true handicap format, we are investing in South African racing’s future. These changes will benefit everyone – from owners and trainers to jockeys and grooms, as well as the millions of racegoers who make the Hollywoodbets Durban July the race that stops the nation.”
