US acting legend Robert Redford died early on Tuesday morning at his home in Utah, the New York Times reported. He was 89.

Redford died in his sleep and a specific cause was not given, according to a statement by Cindi Berger, the chief executive of publicity firm Rogers & Cowan PMK, according to the newspaper.

Redford’s career spans more than six decades. He rose to fame in the 1960s and 1970s with iconic roles in films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), and All the President’s Men (1976), establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s leading men.

Beyond acting, Redford became an acclaimed director, winning the Academy Award for Best Director for Ordinary People (1980). He went on to direct and produce numerous films, often focusing on complex characters and social themes.
