Tributes have poured in from across the region following the death of former Overstrand Executive Mayor Alderman Dudley Coetzee (80), who died on 23 October.
The Overstrand Municipality described his passing as sudden and shocking, extending its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and all those who knew and worked with him.
“Alderman Coetzee served the Overstrand community as a Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor since 2009. His roles included PR councillor, ward councillor, member of the Mayoral Committee, Deputy Mayor and Executive Mayor,” said Overstrand Municipality Mayor Archie Klaas.
A life in public service
Coetzee entered active politics in 2009 as a PR councillor. He went on to serve as a ward councillor and treasurer and chairman of the DA’s Overstrand Constituency before becoming a mayoral committee member for the Finance Portfolio and then Deputy Mayor. He was appointed Executive Mayor in February 2018.
The DA said he had left behind a great legacy as a dedicated public servant, friend and colleague.
“We hold his family and loved ones in our thoughts during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Dudley.”
Financial discipline a hallmark
Throughout his tenure, Coetzee was a strong advocate for sound financial management, fiscal discipline and transparent administration.
He was also actively involved in community welfare initiatives, including Mandela Day outreach programmes to distribute knitted clothing and blankets to senior citizens across the Overstrand region. He engaged directly with local industries, including tourism and fisheries.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
