Two people have been arrested in Gansbaai after police seized approximately R66 000 worth of Tik during an integrated Overstrand operation on Tuesday.
About 88 grams of Tik, with an estimated street value of R66 000, was confiscated along with drug-related exhibits and a cellphone during the operation. The suspects were arrested after a drug surveillence operation during a seperate K9 Unit and South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Prevention Unit operation in Gansbaai.
Four others were arrested in Hawston and Mount Pleasant for seperate drug-related crimes.
“In Hawston, two people were arrested, one for possession of Tik and another for dealing in drugs after officers found Tik, Mandrax and Cocaine in his possession,” said Edward Jantjies, Overstrand Acting Municipal Manager. Two more arrests were made in Mount Pleasant also for possession of Tik and Mandrax.
Illegal fishing
In Hawston, three people were arrested for illegal fishing after police found 116 illegal fish within their possession. They were also found with a gill net and undersized fish.
Two Silver Moon fish, 32 Harders (Mullet), 33 White Steenbras, 46 White Stumpnose and five Chads were confiscated in the process. Police also found and confiscated a vehicle, ski boat, trailer and illegal gill net.
“The combined estimated value of the vehicle, boat and trailer is approximately R120 000,” said Jantjies.
Wanted suspect captured
A suspect wanted in connection with a 2025 case of housebreaking and theft was also arrested during the operation. In August 2025, the suspect allegedly broke into a house with intent to steal.
Over R13 000 in traffic fines
Police also issued R13 500 in traffic fines. “A total of 23 vehicles were stopped and checked during a vehicle control point in Bergsig Street,” Jantjies said. “Combined traffic enforcement efforts resulted in R13 500 in fines being issued for various offences.
The offenses include failure to wear seatbelts and display number plates, unlicensed drivers and motor vehicles, vehicle defects and roadworthiness offences and disregarding a stop sign.
Police also conducted crime prevention patrols and stop-and-search operations in Mount Pleasant, Zwelihle and Schulphoek where a total of 25 people were searched.
According to Jantjies, premises were also searched in Gansbaai, Blompark, Masakhane and Mount Pleasant. “Mandrax was found and confiscated during a search in Gansbaai, while no illegal items were found at the other premises searched,” he said.
Integrated protection and law enforcement
The operation was conducted by the police, enforcement partners and the Overstrand Municipality Public Safety Law Enforcement Units in a series of integrated operations across the region.
Jantjies said that “the operations focused on crime prevention, drug-related offences, traffic enforcement and the protection of marine resources”.
