As Child Safety Month is underway parents are reminded of the importance of safeguarding their children’s health and well-being by ensuring they receive their immunisations on a regular basis.
The Western Cape Government Health and Wellness (WCGHW) offers these immunisations free of charge at its facilities, including clinics.
Immunisations are a critical component of preventive healthcare as it serves to protect children from serious and potentially life-threatening diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and whooping cough. By ensuring your child is up-to-date with their vaccinations, you are not only protecting them but also contributing to the health and safety of the community.
Sister Beatrice Groenewald, Child Health Coordinator in the Overberg District, explained that immunisations offer several key benefits that are crucial for individual and community health.
“Firstly, vaccines help build immunity and prevent the spread of infectious diseases, providing essential protection against various illnesses. Secondly, high vaccination rates contribute to herd immunity, which safeguards those who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons.
“Lastly, vaccines are both safe and effective, as they undergo rigorous testing and continuous monitoring to ensure their safety and efficacy for children.”
Immunisations are available from all Western Cape Government Health and Wellness (WCGHW) Primary Health Care facilities, such as clinics, community day centres and community health centres. Parents play a crucial role in safeguarding their children’s health.
To ensure your child is well-protected, regularly check your child’s Road to Health booklet and consult your health-care provider for any necessary catch-up vaccinations.
“By prioritising the health of children from an early age,” spokesperson for the Department of Health and Wellness in the Overberg District Roché Laws said, “we can lay a strong foundation for them to become healthy adults who can care for their own families in the future.
“During Child Safety Month, we encourage all parents and caregivers to take proactive steps to protect their children. Immunisations are a simple yet powerful tool in ensuring your child’s health and safety.”
Another way in which WCGHW encourages child protection is by encouraging healthier lifestyles. When maintaining a healthy lifestyle for you and your family, you can significantly reduce the frequency of illnesses and promote overall well-being. This involves eating a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity.
A healthy lifestyle not only benefits you, but also ensures that your children or unborn baby are healthier and it lowers the risk of developing chronic conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes later in life.
Additionally, protecting our children at home is crucial. Two key areas to focus on are water safety and kitchen safety. Always supervise children around water, regardless of their swimming abilities, and ensure pools or dams are securely fenced. In the kitchen you can prevent burns by keeping stove handles turned inward, ensuring electrical cords are out of reach, and testing food temperature before serving.
For emergencies, contact an ambulance at 10177 or visit the nearest hospital.
