War veterans, dignitaries, members of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTHs) and the Jan Smuts Regiment were among those who gathered at the Cenotaph in the Hermanus Old Harbour on Sunday 13 November to observe Armistice Day, also commonly known as Remembrance Day or Poppy Day. Armistice Day is observed annually on 11 November across the world to honour the bravery and courage of those who fought in both world wars and to commemorate all those who served in the army since, and those serving in the army today. Lieutenant-Colonel Harvey Saayman, former commanding officer of the Regiment Westelike Provinsie (now Jan Smuts Regiment), encouraged those present to remember the dead by living life to the fullest. “Never forget the price of freedom, as the cost of peace is much higher than the cost of war.”Photos: Bianca Du Plessis
