The heartwarming “Heroes Need Fuel Too” initiative launched by Hermanus Times (HT) has been given a significant boost with news that the community support drive for Overberg firefighters will now be extended to the end of the year.
“What began as a three-month campaign to provide essential supplies to the brave men and women fighting fires across the Overberg region has proven so successful that we have decided to continue the programme through to the upcoming fire season,” Mariette Strydom, editor of HT, proudly declared.
The initiative recognises a simple but crucial truth: firefighters battling blazes in challenging conditions need proper nutrition and hydration to maintain their strength and focus. The programme collects non-perishable goods specifically chosen to provide quick energy and essential relief items for firefighters in the field.
The drive continues to seek donations of:
• 500 ml water bottles and energy drinks for hydration
• Energy bars and nutritious snacks
• Quick energy treats such as Bar One chocolates and Super C sweets
• Practical items, including gummies, lollipops and biscuits
• Essential field supplies such as lip balm
• Hearty options such as bully beef for substantial nutrition
“The response from businesses, schools and community members has been absolutely incredible,” said Strydom. “We’ve seen first-hand how much our community values the sacrifice these firefighters make to keep us safe.”
The extension ensures support will be available throughout the critical fire season, when demand for firefighting services typically peaks across the Western Cape region.
Community members can continue to make donations by contacting: Caledon and surrounds: Mitzi Buys on 076 543 0261 and Hermanus and surrounds: Strydom on 082 443 2184.
According to Strydom no donation is too small, and every contribution does much to help fuel the heroes who risk their lives to protect our communities, homes and natural heritage.
The extended timeline allows for sustained support during what promises to be another challenging fire season, ensuring when firefighters are on the front lines they will have the community backing they need to stay strong and focused on their life-saving work.
