Motorcyclists traded their helmets and leather jackets for heartfelt conversations and shared smiles with the elderly as Nobs Motorcycle Club (MCC) and Meals on Wheels Community Services – Oostenberg treated the Vrederus Tehuis with gifts and donations ahead of Mother’s Day.
What started as a simple outreach and donation campaign turned into an emotional cause for Nobs MCC motorcyclists and Meals on Wheels personnel, who shared smiles, laughter, conversations and food items with the elderly at the home.
The group arrived with and donated various food items, including non-perishables, fresh fruit and vegetables and sweet treats for the residents, pairing them with Mother’s Day gifts for each of them.
The initiative comes after Nobs MCC hosted its inaugural biking rally, the Gargoyle, at the Villiersdorp Showgrounds.
The positive reception from members of the public and community, who attended the rally led to the motorcycle club wanting to give thanks to the community for their warm welcoming.
“It was not only about handing out food and gifts; it was about showing love, respect and human connection,” said the Public Relations Officer of Nobs MCC Benita Kannemeyer.
“Sitting with the residents, hearing their stories, laughing together and simply making them feel seen and valued was the greatest gift of all.”
The appreciation and wisdom from the elderly often reminds people of the importance of spending time with those who are often “forgotten by society.”
According to Kannemeyer, motorcyclists are often judged by stereotypes such as their appearances, loud motorcycles, tattoos and leather jackets.
“But behind the engines and patches, are people with hearts, compassion and a genuine desire to make a difference wherever we can.
“We hope this small gesture reminded the residents that they are loved, appreciated and never forgotten.”
