Hermanus Baboon Action Group (HBAG) has been working hard at motivating for extension of the Overstrand Baboon Management Plan (BMP) after the Overstrand Municipality declared the BMP will be stopped in December.

“A survey specifically focused on the experiences and concerns of the affected communities represents an important component in our approach,” Pat Redford, chairperson of the HBAG, said.

The survey is applicable specifically to those living in the baboon affected areas of Hermanus East. The areas affected are Voëlklip, Fernkloof and the estate, Hermanus Heights, Kwaaiwater and the upper portions of Eastcliff.

“This impasse has alarmed affected communities, and retraction of BMP services poses the return of chaos to these particular areas in Hermanus East. We have noted the BMP funding must be organised differently. Given the statistics representing these affected areas over the past five years, the implementation of the BMP has rendered success in managing the Voëlklip and Vogelgat troops, to spend most of their active time outside of the urban edge.”

She further stated that the BMP has contributed to the safety of the troops as they spend most of their time in conservation areas away from the many hazards of urban areas.

“The collaborative initiatives among community, waste department teams, HBAG and the monitoring teams proves the BMP is a workable solution to baboon management.”

The survey must by completed by 3 September. Send an email to info@hermanusbaboons.co.za or a WhatsApp to 082 908 4002 to get a form.. The HBAG is a voluntary association, formed seven years ago to represent the concerns of residents in affected areas in Hermanus East. HBAG is an elected representative on the Ward 3 committee.
