“It is always fun to work with children, especially when we can play a role in their lives.”
These were the words of Jenna Knowles and Gabriella Marriott occupational therapy students who are currently working at Lukhanyo Primary School in Zwelihle. “We held a Grade R Fun Day as part of our community interaction clinical rotation. Gabriella and I are part of a group of occupational-therapy students who are running projects at Lukhanyo Primary School throughout this year. One of these projects is the Funday project, which aims to provides learners with an opportunity to be introduced to sport,” said Knowles.
Altogether 170 Grade R pupils enjoyed a variety of games from sack-racing, soccer dribbling and rock-and spoon racing. The next fun day will take place in October. “We are grateful to all our sponsors who made the day possible: Claudia Smargiasso, H2O/ BWT International, The Hermanus Senior Centre, Yorke Cash and Carry, Buco, Ocean Creek Spur, Rola Motors Hermanus, WP Packaging and two anonymous sponsors,” she concluded. “As a result of their generosity each of the learners received a lucky packet and juice once the sporting activities had finished and the winning team were rewarded with a cake sponsored by Gateway Super Spar.”
