Four promising athletes of Mispah School for Learners with Special Educational Needs in Elim have been selected to participate in the South African Schools Athletics for the Intellectually Impaired National All Age Games taking place from 23-27 September in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.
Benelene Galant, Denelene Galant and Adrian Ambros have been selected as part of the cross country team, while Lilly Van Wyk was selected for the netball team. These four Mispah learners will be part of the Western Cape Sport Association for Para-Athletes with Intellectual Disabilities Team that will be participating in the national competition.
These learners and the school, however, need your help to make their dream of participating in the event come true. Abraham Adams, the principal, reports that each athlete needs R 4 650 to cover their costs.
“We are appealing to the public and business to assist in our efforts to raise the funds to cover the costs attached of the athletes because this is a unique opportunity for our Intellectually Impaired learners who excel in sports codes on a regular basis.
“Mispah School, situated in the picturesque town of Elim, caters specifically for learners who are severely intellectually disabled and learners who are physically disabled. Mispah School also has a hostel in which most of our learners stay during the school terms, and they only return home when the school holidays start.
“Sports is an integral part of the school’s extra-curricular activities and we participate in codes like football / FUTSAL, netball, cricket, cross country and mini-cricket.
“Mispah School needs approximately R 18 600 to ensure our athletes can participate and we are hoping that there are individuals or business that can make a contribution to ensure our athletes’ participation at this national event for Para-Athletes with Intellectual Disabilities.”
