Kimi Antonelli, produced a nerveless pole position lap at the Circuit of the Americas on Saturday to put himself one victory away from Formula One immortality. The 20-year-old Italian’s composure under immense pressure was there for all to see as he stormed to his seventh pole of the season with a perfectly-judged 1:34.035.
The Mercedes ace can wrap up the drivers’ championship on Sunday if he converts pole to victory and his rivals stumble.

Antonelli’s margin over nearest challenger Max Verstappen was 0.179 seconds, with the Dutchman’s Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar securing a career-best third. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc qualified fourth ahead of Russell in the second Mercedes and seven-time champion Hamilton in the other Prancing Horse.
The young Italian admitted Q3 proved treacherous. “Very happy with qualifying, but Q3 was very tough with the wind, gusty and unpredictable, but I’m happy to stick it on pole.”
“We got pole so we’ll try to win tomorrow,” said Antonelli with typical understatement. “Max has been very quick and did an incredible job in qualifying so it’s not going to be easy. Hopefully, we’ll be leading into Turn One and we’ll try to set the pace, even though it’s going to be very tight.”
Verstappen, hunting his fifth Austin victory, was left frustrated. “Q3 was not good. Q1, Q2 it was nice, but for whatever reason with both sets of tyres, I just didn’t have the balance. No mistakes, but just no grip.”
McLaren’s championship hopes faded further with Oscar Piastri and reigning world champion Lando Norris qualifying a lowly seventh and eighth, ahead of Racing Bulls’ rookie Arvid Lindblad, who carries a five-place grid penalty, and Liam Lawson rounding out the top ten.
Ferrari had topped all three practice sessions through the weekend, with Leclerc leading FP1 and FP2 before Hamilton claimed top spot in final practice. But when the pressure intensified in qualifying’s top-ten shootout, Mercedes and their precocious Italian found another gear.
Track limits proved a constant headache throughout the weekend, with 207 laps deleted on Friday, 42 in final practice, and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly requiring a last-gasp lap to survive Q1 after losing his earlier time.
As Antonelli prepares for potentially the most significant 56 laps of his fledgling career, the paddock holds its collective breath. Can the Italian wunderkind deliver under ultimate pressure and etch his name into Formula One folklore?
