Her love for nature and especially plants and animals is the reason why she loves to be at the nursery and to give advice to the clients.
When you ask Lani Delport, the owner of Afdaksrivier Nursery about the different plants, she not only gives you their scientific names, but also tells you where to plant them and how to care of them. And her advice on how to get rid of snails and worms in an animal-friendly way is spot on.
The quaint nursery with its beautiful gardens is situated on the Afdaksrivier Farm that has been owned by four generations of the Delport family and is the perfect place when you want to break away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
You can’t miss it – a big red harvester along with the Afdaksrivier signpost tells you exactly where to turn off from the R43 between Fisherhaven and Benguela Cove.
Afdaksrivier Nursery, which opened its doors approximately 15 years ago, offers a mix of indigenous and exotic plants. Clients can also visit the Little Shop where they can browse around for bric-a-brac, art and crafts and garden products. You can also stock-up on yummy preserves, farm fresh eggs, honey, cheese, olives, natural beauty products and much more at this interesting farm style shop.
To round your visit off you can take the weight off your feet and relax at one of the cosy seating places in the garden or inside the shop and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, or a cold drink and a light snack.
In a first for Afdaksrivier it hosted the Hermanus Times Fun Walk in April. “The fun walk was great fun (excuse the pun),” said Lani Nel, “and a first for us. The future will tell what happenings there will be going forward, but we currently host a small pop-in market every Wednesday from 09:30 to 13:00.”
The Pop-In Market has grown in popularity over the years. At the weekly market you can find anything from fresh veggies grown on the farm to natural oils and cleaning products, relishes, preserves, gluten-free muffins and quiches.
“There are a few core vendors that have been with the market since the onset,” Lani explained, “but we have visitor vendors and occasional vendors, so there is always movement and rotation of products together with the weekly favourites, which include decadent pies, cupcakes and pastries, seed loaves, doll clothes, kiddies party packs, rusks, cookies, stunning Eastern European waistcoats and throws, nuts and micro greens, fresh veg when available and as per seasonal growth. Works of art, bric-n-brac and crafts and such are also sold when the rotating vendors join.
Afdaksrivier Nursery and Little Shop are open Monday-Saturday, 09:00-16:00.
