When Gansbaai police officers confronted a gun toting man on Sunday 12 March they did not hesitate to disarm and apprehend him. Lieutenant-Colonel Winston Coetzee, Gansbaai Police Station commander, reported the officers were doing foot patrols at the New Development housing project in Beverly Hills when they came across the suspect walking with a firearm in his hand. “The members managed to disarm and apprehend the suspect,” he said. “They confiscated a .38 Astra Cadiz revolver with the serial number filed off as well as five live rounds of ammunition.” The 27-year-old appeared in Hermanus Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 15 March on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and of ammunition. The firearm, said Coetzee, will be sent for ballistic testing and analysis to determine whether it was involved in other crimes. He applauded the members for their commitment and good work, and reiterated the Gansbaai police will remain resolute in recovering unlicensed firearms and ammunition as these are the weapons of choice in the commission of serious and violent crimes.
