Beyond Black Mountain (BBM) hosted its quarterly tourism meeting, which is open to the public, product owners and stakeholders of the area, at the Caledon Tsogo Sun (Caledon Casino Hotel & Spa) on Thursday 13 June.

Lizël Kimber of BBM told Hermanus Times: “We specifically held the meeting at the casino so that Lynton January of the Caledon Casino Hotel & Spa could broadly outline what the possibilities would be if the licence were to be moved to Somerset West.

At this point the Caledon Tsogo Sun is still busy seeing if it would be viable for the casino to move or not. It is not set in stone and there is no definite answer yet.

“January briefly explained what the development strategy would be should the licence move, the investment [BBM] would like to make in the resort and what the impact would be on the community,” said Kimber.

“He also explained how the casino would like to get more involved with the tourism sector in Caledon and how important it is for partnerships and relationships to be built within the sector for the benefit of the community.”

January also announced the roll-out of a programme for Caledon Ratepayers Association (CRPA) members who, for a minimal fee, can get a loyalty card allowing them discounted rates for the use of the Warm Water Spa facilities.

Kimber announced a very exciting project involving murals in town.

“We are currently working alongside Baz-Art on a project to do a global street art project for Caledon in November.

“We aim to paint a minimum of 20 walls throughout Caledon. Any wall that is volunteered we would like to paint with art.

“The theme is Seed, Grow, Bloom because of the Wildflower Garden and Nature Reserve as well as our agricultural history and heritage.”

According to Kimber Baz-Art will supply the artists, paints and so on. “We are looking at getting 10 local and 10 international artists. Two international artists, one from Scotland and one from Canada, have already expressed interest, and we already have our first local artist.”

The local zipline, which is nearing completion, was also discussed.

Kimber mentioned a site walk for product owners and stakeholders will be hosted soon.

Should you be interested in having a wall painted for the art project please send a photo of the wall as well as a letter of permission for use of the wall for such purposes to beyondblackmountain@gmail.com
