There is a growing number of cases involving passengers caught transporting drugs in taxis.

This according to Dean O’Neill, Overstrand’s Municipal Manager, after a successful intelligence operation on 1 October. “The Overstrand Municipal Rapid Response Unit arrested a man on drug-related charges after searching a taxi on the R43, near Fisherhaven,” he related. “A 35-year-old Zwelihle man was found with 112 Mandrax tablets and a 50 g bag of tik.”

In another joint VCP roadblock with the Task Team held on the R43 at Steyn’s Quarry, 70 vehicles were stopped and several fines were issued for violations such as expired vehicle license discs, cracked windscreens, illegal number plates, and permitting an unlicenced driver to drive.

They also conducted crime prevention patrols in Mount Pleasant, Zwelihle, Hermanus CBD and the New Harbour, Sandbaai, the Industrial areas and Westcliff.

“On 2 October, the Task Team stopped a vehicle in a routine stop-and-search operation in Hawston and discovered a Microsoft Notepad, three charging cables and a home-made light-coloured balaclava in a backpack,” O’Neill said.

“The 40-year-old suspect was arrested for possessing suspected stolen property and was handed over to the Hermanus police. The owner of the stolen goods was subsequently located.”
