The grounds of Groenberg Secondary School in Grabouw buzzed with laughter and excitement on Wednesday as the community came together to celebrate the International Day for Persons with Disabilities in a vibrant display of inclusion and solidarity.
Organised by Agape Family Ministries and the Overberg Education Department, the Fun Day marked both the international awareness day and the conclusion of Disability Rights Awareness Month, bringing together learners with severe to profound intellectual disabilities for a morning of joy and community connection.
The celebration began with an awareness walk through Grabouw’s streets, designed to spotlight the rights and dignity of people with disabilities. Learners, staff, parents and community partners participated in the procession, which was made safe through the dedicated support of the Grabouw Traffic Department.
Following the walk, the school transformed into a hub of inclusive activities, with specially designed play and sports programs that prioritised fun, engagement and participation for all. The sight of smiling faces and sounds of excitement perfectly captured the day’s mission of celebrating meaningful inclusion. The event also served as a platform to recognise local accessibility efforts through the Western Cape Education Department’s “Spot the Inclusion” initiative. This programme identifies public spaces and organisations that actively promote accessibility and disability inclusion throughout the province.
In a fitting recognition of their commitment to accessibility the Grabouw Traffic Department received a certificate during the celebration. The department was honoured for implementing oral learner’s licence testing, providing crucial access to essential services for individuals unable to complete written examinations. “While certificates and awards added to the celebration, the greatest reward of the day was the joy of seeing children included, supported, and having fun,” organisers noted.. The event served as a powerful reminder that meaningful inclusion extends beyond awareness campaigns and policy initiatives; it requires active community participation and shared responsibility. Grabouw continues to demonstrate that celebrating diversity and promoting accessibility creates stronger, more compassionate communities for everyone.
