A recent storm has forced 80-year-old Shellie Salome Wentzel and her son out of their home in Bereaville after their home suffered extensive roof damage. They are urgently appealing to the community for assistance and donations.
Wentzel, affectionately known as Auntie Shellie, and her son who’s often referred to as Boeta, were forced to leave their home and temporarily relocated to the home of her relative, Vida Sauls after the storm left the roof damaged and unsafe. According to community project coordinator Henno James Sauls, police assisted with moving Wentzel from the damaged property to safety.
However, the arrangement is only temporary. Vida also has health problems and is unable to accommodate and assist Wentzel on a long-term basis.
Sauls said efforts had been made to find assistance for Wentzel, including approaching the municipality, but these attempts have not resulted in a solution to the urgent housing situation.
“We need hands for roof repairs and general fixing so that Auntie Shellie can live safely in her own home again,” Sauls said.
The appeal is for financial donations as well as building materials, skilled labour and volunteers who can assist with repairing the damaged roof and carrying out other necessary work around the house.
Sauls said every contribution would make a difference.
“Any contribution, big or small, will be appreciated,” he said. The goal is to restore the home to a safe and habitable condition so that Wentzel can return to her own house rather than remain dependent on temporary accommodation.
Community members, businesses, organisations and individuals who are able to assist are encouraged to contribute towards the repairs or offer their services and materials.

The appeal is ultimately a plea for the community to rally around an elderly resident in need and help restore not only her home, but her ability to live there safely and with dignity.
