Helderberg Hospital gets another facelift with R4m upgrade

SOMERSET WEST – A R4 million repair and renovation project is currently underway at Helderberg Hospital with the aim to improve overall patient care and experience.

The project forms part of the Western Cape health and wellness department’s 2025-’26 financial year infrastructure programme. The renovations will include critical roof replacements at the facility’s administration building, as well as phased vinyl flooring replacement across key hospital passages and clinical areas.

“This project is essential to ensure a safe, functional and dignified healthcare environment for patients and staff,” explains Sharon Leo, CEO of Helderberg Hospital.

The refurbishment follows a R35 million renovation project at the hospital in 2024 and is the second healthcare facility in the Helderberg to see restoration, following upgrades and maintenance at Gustrouw Clinic in Strand last year.

The project at the local health facility forms part of the department’s R1,8 billion investment into health infrastructure over the next three years.

Work to the facility in Somerset West started in mid-April, with renovations set to be implemented in phases to minimise service disruptions.

The project aims to enhance safety and infrastructure durability by removing old flooring and replacing it to ensure a secure foundation. This is necessary to meet industry standards, with the new flooring offering a lifespan of more than 20 years while improving infection control, safety and long-term cost efficiency.

During the refurbishment, there may be limited access to some areas of the hospital. However, alternative arrangements will be communicated where necessary.

Areas that are expected to be affected are the admin building’s first floor during the roof replacement; main reception; selected wards; passages; diagnostic areas; and support services during the phased floor replacement. Ward 7 (B Ward) and the High Care Unit will also be temporarily closed during specific work phases.

The work is expected to take place during the 2026-’27 financial year, but the department is warning patients that timelines may be adjusted as a result of weather conditions or unforeseen construction requirements. It, however, assured that healthcare services will continue and patient safety remains a top priority throughout the project.

“Helderberg Hospital management and the Department of Health and Wellness remain committed to transparent communication with staff, patients and the broader community throughout the project,” Abulele Dyasi, spokesperson for the department’s Khayelitsha and Eastern Substructure, reiterated.

Patients and visitors are urged to keep an eye out for notices and adhere to staff guidance while construction is in progress.
