Residents of Edgemead jumped into action this past weekend to assist with clearing trees that had blown over and redirecting traffic in flooded roads, following strong winds and heavy rainfall conditions on Saturday and Sunday.
Cape Town experienced heavy rainfall this past weekend throughout Monday morning. By midday Monday, however, the rainfall had cleared, with a maximum of 16°C, cloudy conditions having been predicted by the South African Weather Services (SAWS).
According to the Edgemead Neighbourhood Watch, the weekend’s storm saw trees that had blown over and roads flooded. Their patrollers, all volunteers, however, did not hesitate to jump in to assist, they said.
“Our volunteers and Precinct Response were out directing traffic, keeping roads moving safely while conditions were far from ideal. Two trees that had fallen over partially blocking our roads, were dealt with swiftly,” they said.
The City of Cape Town was also called out to assist.
The crews attending got straight to work and unblocked the stormwater drain that was causing the road to flood on Edgemead Drive. “Once cleared, our roads were safe again,” they added.

Power outage
According to Eskom several areas across the Western Cape were left without electricity due to inclement weather this weekend. “The adverse weather conditions have resulted in network faults and infrastructure damage in certain locations,” they said.
Technical teams were onsite working to assess the damage and restore supply as soon as it was safe to do so, they added.
The City’s disaster risk management also conducted assessments in several areas following the heavy rain. There has been localised flooding in many parts of the metropole, the City said adding that given the conditions, the public is requested to please exercise caution and report emergencies to their Public Emergency Communications Centre on 021 480 7700.
According to the SAWS cloudy conditions will continue throughout Tuesday with a high of 17°C predicted. Wednesday will be partly cloudy with some sunshine.
