MPUMALANGA – The Hawks in Mpumalanga, in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Asset Forfeiture Unit, have secured a court order for the forfeiture of a Toyota Fortuner valued at R339 200 after explosives were discovered inside the vehicle.

The High Court granted the forfeiture order on 12 October as part of ongoing efforts to deprive criminals of assets linked to unlawful activities.

The vehicle was seized during a routine police patrol in Dientjie.

At approximately 12:30, South African Police Service (SAPS) members stopped a white Toyota Fortuner and searched the vehicle.

During the search, officers discovered two explosives labelled “Super Power” inside a cup holder next to the gear lever. Four additional explosives of the same type were later found concealed in the left front door panel.

Both occupants were arrested and detained at Dientjie Police Station. The Fortuner was subsequently seized and registered as an exhibit as part of the investigation.

Brigadier Bruce Davenport, acting provincial head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, welcomed the forfeiture and commended the cooperation between law enforcement agencies.

“This forfeiture sends a clear message that crime does not pay. The Hawks remain resolute in ensuring that individuals involved in criminal activities are not only brought before the courts but are also deprived of the resources and assets that facilitate or benefit their unlawful conduct,” Davenport said.

He added that the Hawks would continue working closely with law enforcement partners to dismantle criminal networks and protect communities from serious and organised crime.

The Hawks encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities involving explosives or other illegal substances.

Information can be reported to the nearest police station, anonymously through the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111, or via the MySAPS app.
