Pandya reportedly set for MI captaincy axe and franchise exit

Mumbai Indians look to be in full-blown meltdown mode. Hardik Pandya is set to be axed as captain, and the all-rounder is reportedly seeking an exit from the franchise altogether after a catastrophic relationship breakdown with the management.

The five-time IPL champions, reduced to just four wins from 14 matches in their disastrous 2026 campaign, have decided to cut their losses on the Pandya experiment, but the fallout from their captaincy gamble threatens to plunge the franchise into unprecedented turmoil.

Sources close to the developments have told NDTV that Pandya’s departure from the captaincy role is all but confirmed, with the 32-year-old actively looking to leave Mumbai Indians entirely. The relationship between player and management has deteriorated beyond repair, leaving both parties seeking an amicable separation.

“Hardik will seek a transfer. It is not just about captaincy but about personal realities as well. Can you work for a company when you don’t have a good relation with the management?” a top coach and former India player told NDTV.

The revelation lays bare the extent of the crisis at one of the IPL’s most successful franchises. Mumbai Indians backed Pandya as their long-term leader when they controversially replaced Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2024 season, but the decision has spectacularly backfired.

“The next Mumbai Indians captain will be the one who has the blessings of Rohit Sharma. Mumbai realise the mistake they have made. But it will not be Rohit himself,” the source revealed.

That final caveat is crucial. Despite being thrust back into the centre of Mumbai’s captaincy decision-making process, Rohit will not resume the leadership role himself. The 37-year-old has made it clear there will be no U-turn on his own captaincy, meaning MI must identify a fresh leader capable of commanding Rohit’s respect and the dressing room’s loyalty.

The situation represents a stunning fall from grace for Pandya, who was brought in from Gujarat Titans in a high-profile trade deal with the specific intention of becoming Mumbai’s next-generation leader. Instead, his tenure has been marred by poor results, dressing-room tensions, and now an acrimonious exit.

Questions have been raised about whether Mumbai should have poached Gujarat Titans coach Ashish Nehra alongside Pandya to ensure continuity and a proven leadership structure. However, the source dismissed such suggestions as unrealistic.

“This is the reality of IPL. No franchise can poach coach and captain from the other franchise. Why would Ashish Nehra come?” the source concluded.

Mumbai Indians now face a critical juncture. They must identify a captain who can unite a fractured dressing room, restore Rohit Sharma to a position of influence and respect, and drag the franchise back to its winning ways after one of the most turbulent campaigns in IPL history.

A concrete update on Hardik Pandya’s future at Mumbai Indians is expected within the next couple of weeks, with the franchise’s retention and release decisions for the next IPL season looming large.
