Exactly half of the Free State’s police precincts reported lower crime rates in the past year, according to the latest statistics from the SAPS.
A total of 57 of the province’s 113 precincts recorded fewer crimes between April 2025 and March 2026, compared to the previous year. In comparison, 36 precincts reported increases while 20 remained stable.
Reported: 39 653 violent crimes
The province recorded 39 653 violent crimes and 19 925 property crimes during the period. Violent crimes include murder, assault, robbery and rape, while property crimes cover burglary, theft and vehicle-related offences.
Among larger precincts with more than 200 reported crimes, Welkom showed the most significant absolute reduction at, 13,8%; followed by Thabong, with a 12,6% decline.
Bloemspruit, Botshabelo and Ficksburg also featured among the top five most improved precincts, recording decreases of 12,7%, 13,3% and 17,7% respectively.
Several smaller precincts recorded even steeper percentage declines. Goedemoed reported a 52,9% drop, while Verkykerskop and Roadside recorded decreases of 42,1% and 37,9% respectively.
On the negative side, Senekal recorded the highest percentage increase among larger precincts, at 19,1%. Kopanong, Kagisanong, Selosesha and Mangaung also featured among the most worsened precincts, with increases ranging from 6,6% to 11%.

The steepest rise was recorded at Steunmekaar, which saw crime jump by 62,5%, though the precinct reported low overall numbers with only ten crimes during the period.
The statistics were published on 29 May, and cover the full financial year.
