Funds raised for head girl diagnosed with rare and aggressive form of cancer

Chánterie van Rensburg

A Back-a-Buddy fundraising campaign is currently underway to help raise money for the head girl of a Cape Town primary school who was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer earlier this month.

The fundraising campaign for Chánterie van Rensburg, a Grade 7 learner and head girl at Panorama Primary School in Welgelegen, has so far been able to reach R314 600 of the R800 000 goal. By today 321 people have made donations, but the public is encouraged to continue their support for the young learner.

“For those who are able, every contribution will help to give Chánterie the fighting chance that she deserves,” the description on the Back-a-Buddy page reads.

Chánterie is a bright young scholar who is head girl at her school and a passionate sport and culture participant, it reads.

In January 2026 her life changed suddenly when she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer. As Chánterie begins intensive treatment her family is doing everything possible to ensure that she receives the best care, while facing an uncertain road ahead.

The page related how she had experienced sudden numbness in her legs and was admitted to hospital on 6 January. An MRI scan revealed a growth in her spine and she underwent a four-hour operation.

Further tests brought devastating news; a rare form of cancer. A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan later confirmed the cancer had spread, which meant she had to start intensive chemotherapy immediately.

According to the description Chánterie is known for her strength and leadership. She is a role-model to her peers and younger brother. That same determination now carries her through long hospital days and demanding treatment.

Time is critical and the journey ahead remains uncertain, but hope and faith guide Chánterie and her family forward, the description concludes.
