The Free State Department of Health strongly condemns an incident of violence that occurred at Thabong Clinic involving a patient and clinic staff.
The incident arose during a routine biometrics and file-issuing process on Thursday 15 January, where a misunderstanding led to the patient becoming aggressive towards healthcare workers.

Escalating violence
The patient physically assaulted an official responsible for issuing files and subsequently assaulted the clinic manager who attempted to intervene and resolve the matter.
A case was opened at Thabong Police Station, and the suspect was arrested and charged with assault. The accused was later released on warning.
“The Department will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and explore measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. As an employer, we have a responsibility to ensure the safety of our employees, a duty we take very seriously,” said MEC Monyatso Mahlatsi.
Zero tolerance policy
The Department condemns all acts of violence against healthcare workers. Such behaviour will not be tolerated, and authorities call upon all community members to respect healthcare staff who are committed to serving the public.
The incident highlights growing concerns about the safety of healthcare workers in public facilities and the need for enhanced security measures to protect staff whilst they perform their duties.
The Department has indicated that it will review current safety protocols to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
