FRANSCHHOEK – In a significant development for rural hospitality education, the renowned Franschhoek Hospitality Academy & Learning Centre (FHA) announced last week a transformative partnership with the Prince Albert Community Trust (PACT) that will see the establishment of a new campus in the heart of the Karoo.

The collaboration will give birth to the Prince Albert Community Trust Hospitality Academy (PACTHA), designed to mirror the educational excellence that has made FHA a beacon of hospitality training since its establishment in 2017.

Bringing excellence to the Karoo

The new campus represents a bold expansion of FHA’s mission to provide accessible, high-quality hospitality education to historically disadvantaged youth across the Western Cape. Prince Albert, often dubbed the “Franschhoek of the Karoo” for its growing appeal to artists and tourism, will now become a hub for professional hospitality training in the region.

“This partnership represents more than just expanding our geographic reach,” explained academy representatives. “It’s about breaking down barriers and ensuring that young people in rural communities have the same access to premium education and career opportunities as their urban counterparts.”

Comprehensive training program

PACTHA will offer FHA’s comprehensive curriculum, including practical courses, evening classes, and short-term programs specifically designed to enhance employability within the local tourism and hospitality industry. The academy will focus on creating skilled professionals who can contribute to the growth of the Karoo’s emerging tourism sector.

Local program delivery will be overseen by PACT, with academic oversight and ongoing support provided by FHA, ensuring consistent educational standards across both campuses.

Economic impact and community development

The initiative extends far beyond traditional education, targeting the creation of sustainable job opportunities in the hospitality sector while strengthening local economies through comprehensive skills development. The partnership aims to break cycles of poverty through accessible education and support the growth of tourism infrastructure throughout the Karoo region.

Prince Albert Community Trust, known for its commitment to being a change agent in addressing inequality and empowering youth, brings valuable local knowledge and community connections to the partnership.

Pilot program launch

The ambitious project will begin with a carefully managed pilot program launching in February 2026, starting with a select group of students. This measured approach will allow both organizations to refine their collaborative model and ensure the highest quality educational experience.

The timing coincides with growing interest in Karoo tourism, as travelers increasingly seek authentic South African experiences beyond traditional wine country destinations.

A model for rural education

Industry experts view this partnership as a potential model for bringing specialised vocational training to underserved rural communities across South Africa. The hospitality sector, facing ongoing skills shortages, particularly in emerging tourism destinations, stands to benefit significantly from this expanded talent pipeline.

As South Africa continues to develop its tourism infrastructure beyond major cities, initiatives like PACTHA demonstrate how educational partnerships can create sustainable economic opportunities while preserving the authentic character of rural communities.

The February 2026 launch will mark the beginning of what both organisations hope will become a transformative force for youth development and economic growth in the Karoo region.
