GQEBERHA – A 43-year-old former police officer was fatally shot in an incident in the Mount Croix area on Monday, 16 February 2026, as confirmed by SAPS Mount Road.
According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, it is alleged that at approximately 13:50 on the aforementioned date, SAPS Mount Road attended to a complaint in Eastbourne Road, Mount Croix.
“On arrival they found the victim Bonile Xasa (43) in his vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head,” she said. “The members also found a 9mm Glock firearm with ammunition.”
Janse Van Rensburg confirmed that the deceased was not a police officer. “Xasa resigned five years ago from the SAPS.”
SAPS at this stage do not believe that there is any foul play; however, an inquest was opened for further investigation.
