Former Knysna mayor shot dead; suspects still sought

KNYSNA – Detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit are investigating a murder and three counts of attempted murder following a shooting in Joodsekamp, Knysna, on Wednesday evening.

Police responded to a shooting in Ngxalo Street at about 21:20 and found a man (48) with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and upper body. He was declared deceased at the scene.

The DA in Knysna identified the victim as Ndoda Aubrey Tsengwa, a former mayor and ward councilor who had served in council since 2016.

Tsengwa was driving a vehicle with three passengers when they were approached by an unknown man who opened fire on the vehicle before fleeing the scene on foot. One of the passengers sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was transported to hospital for medical treatment.

The motive for the shooting has not been determined and no arrests have been made.

The scene was processed by police forensic personnel. Detectives are following up on leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.

The DA in Knysna called on police to apprehend the perpetrators.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones, the leadership and staff of Knysna Municipality, and the people of Knysna at large. We also wish the three individuals injured during the incident a full and speedy recovery.

Cllr Tsengwa was a dedicated public representative who devoted himself to serving his community and contributing to the development of the Garden Route. His commitment to local government and the well-being of its communities leaves a lasting legacy.

His tragic death is a painful reminder of the devastating impact of violence and the risks faced by those who serve in public life.

While the circumstances remain subject to investigation, we condemn all forms of violence and call for a thorough investigation and accountability.

Let us honour his memory by protecting our democracy and ensuring that those who serve our communities can do so without fear.
